I was surprised and shocked at the many mistruths of the oil industry, and most importantly "what is synthetic motor oil today?" All oil companies in North America including the big three - Exxon, Mobil and Shell, have been selling mineral oil and labelling it "synthetic" since 1999. Since 1999, the term "synthetic" has been just a "marketing term" and not based on its components. Mobil sued Castrol in 1998 for selling mineral oil and calling it "synthetic," but lost the lawsuit. The judge declared "synthetic' to be a marketing term not based on its components and now included API Group 3 mineral oils. The entire oil industry then followed suit and sold API Group 3 mineral oils as their own "synthetics." AMSOIL was the only company whom stuck to their principles and continued to sell 'chemically derived synthetics.' which costs a lot more to produce, but offers many benefits to the consumer and environment. These benefits include longer drain intervals, reduced engine wear, better fuel economy, and fewer emissions.
